A calmer moving checklist.

Plan the decisions, boxes, deadlines, first night, and new-home reset without holding the entire move in your head.

Before the first box

Use the checklist as a sequence, not another source of pressure.

Start with the next decision you can complete. Verification details—dates, contracts, address rules, insurance requirements, and utility schedules—should always come from the responsible provider, property owner, agency, or qualified professional.

01

4–8 weeks before

Decide what is moving before the boxes take over.

A lighter move starts with decisions, not packing tape. Work room by room and give every item a clear next step.

  • Confirm the move date, access windows, and who is responsible for each major step.
  • Choose a simple decision set: keep, donate, sell, recycle, or dispose.
  • Declutter one small zone at a time and set a deadline for anything you plan to sell.
  • Create a room list for the new home so each packed box has a destination.
  • Collect moving estimates in one place and compare the same scope of work.
  • Start a protected folder for contracts, receipts, inventories, and key contacts.
02

1–3 weeks before

Connect the packing plan to the administrative plan.

Boxes are only half of a move. Keep deadlines, transfers, addresses, and costs visible alongside the physical work.

  • Build one address-change list covering financial, government, medical, school, subscription, and personal contacts.
  • Schedule utility stops and starts, then record confirmation details and any equipment returns.
  • Number every box and record its destination room plus a short contents summary.
  • Keep identification, medications, valuables, keys, and essential documents out of the moving truck.
  • Confirm parking, elevator, key, pet, child-care, and property-access arrangements.
  • Update the moving budget as deposits, supplies, travel, cleaning, and provider costs become known.
03

Pack separately

Protect the first night from the rest of the move.

Use one clearly marked container or bag that stays with you. Adjust this list for your household, climate, pets, and travel plan.

  • Identification, keys, wallet, essential documents, and provider contact details
  • Prescribed medications and any provider-directed care supplies
  • Phone chargers, power bank, basic tools, flashlight, and batteries
  • Toilet paper, soap, towels, trash bags, paper towels, and basic cleaning supplies
  • Bedding, sleepwear, a change of clothes, and weather-appropriate layers
  • Water, simple food, pet supplies, child essentials, and anything needed before stores open
04

Move day + first week

Finish the move, then reset the home intentionally.

The goal is not to unpack everything immediately. Restore the few systems that make the new space functional first.

  • Photograph the old and new spaces as appropriate and record meter readings or condition notes.
  • Check box numbers against the inventory before the moving team leaves.
  • Set up sleep, bathroom, medication, food, pet, and child routines before decorative areas.
  • Confirm utilities, internet, mail, keys, access, and any provider follow-ups.
  • Choose one landing zone for keys, mail, documents, and items that still need decisions.
  • Review the final budget and save contracts, receipts, and warranty or service records together.

After the move

Carry the useful records forward.
